West Africa, Northeastern Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire, Mano or Dan peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A large carved wood mask from the Mano or Dan peoples of Western Africa. The striking visage is comprised of a prominent nose, open mouth with silver painted teeth, slit eyes with incised lids and lashes, a wide forehead crested at the center, a delineated chin, and a skillfully carved and incised coiffure. The periphery is lined with dozens of perforations to which textile costumes would be attached. Masks like this example were used to represent native spirits which lived in the jungles, and are considered to be protective objects with oftentimes sacred symbolism. A wonderful and large example with fabulous age patina! Size: 10.125" L x 6.75" W x 10" H (25.7 cm x 17.1 cm x 25.4 cm)
According to William Siegmann (in Sotheby's New York, The Robert Rubin Collection of African Art, May 13, 2011, lot 19), "[the] Mano live in Northeastern Liberia adjacent to the Dan. The two groups are very closely related linguistically and culturally, with one exception. The Mano maintain the Poro society as a principal feature of social organization, while the Dan do not have this society. The two groups create similar art objects, though used in somewhat different ways. Dan carvers often produced works for Mano patrons and vice versa. Thus it is often difficult to distinguish with certainty which culture a particular work comes from without specific information on the carver or provenance."
