Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Luba/Kusu, ca. early 20th century CE. A remarkable carved-wood sculpture of a seated ancestor figure painted black and embellished with a high burnish. The stylized figure's long, slender arms hang from his square shoulders, paralleling his narrow torso, and folding together on his lap. Resting atop a thick neck, his sizable head displays a pair of immense almond-shaped eyes, a flat nose, a straight mouth, and a pointed chin. A rounded coiffure frames his stylized visage. Size: 2" W x 5.375" H (5.1 cm x 13.7 cm); 6.875" H (17.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Collection number written on back in white ink. Proper right arm as been reattached with adhesive and break lines visible in areas. Surface repair to proper right side of head. Expected nicks, chips, and abrasions, as shown. Otherwise, very nice with lovely earthen deposits throughout.
