Central Asia, probably from the Kashmir region, ca. 1800 CE. An incredibly rare find, a complete landscape-oriented manuscript of the "Bhagavad Gita" in Sanskrit on fine paper, featuring 206 pages, 12 full page miniature paintings, and 17 illuminated front pages. The Schoyen Collection describes a near identical one held in their collection: "[text in a] single column, 6 lines in a bold calligraphic Devanagari script, initials and folio numbers in left margin, colophons and punctuation in red, titles in gold, frames in orange, red and black surrounding the text, title pages in elaborate illuminated frames imitating Islamic conventions in gold, red, orange, blue and black" (MS: 2099). Size: 3.5" W x 5.75" H (8.9 cm x 14.6 cm)
The "Bhagavad Gita" is a 700-verse Sanskrit scripture that is part of the epic poem "Mahabharata", one of the two major Hindu foundational texts. The "Gita"as it is known is the most influential Hindu text, applicable to all schools of Hinduism like no other written work. It is structured as a narrative between a prince, Arjuna, and the god Krishna, and its themes of selfless leadership has inspired people for millennia. This includes many in the Indian Independence movement. Gandhi referred to it as his "spiritual dictionary".
From the later medieval period onward, Kashmir was a famed place of manuscript production, in part because of its connections to the fertile trading grounds of the Silk Road. Sultan Zain-ul-Abideen sent local Kashmir artisans to Samarkand in the 14th century to learn the art of paper making, leading to great demand from India for Kashmiri manuscripts. The calligraphists in Kashmir also invented an ink which could not be washed away with water, further increasing the value of their manuscripts.
