Northwestern Europe, England, London, ca. 1821 to 1858 CE. A beautiful pair of 19th century woodwind instruments made from wood, elephant ivory, silver, and brass. The first is a George Aster & Co. 6-keyed flute made from boxwood with elephant ivory ferrules and silver keys. The flute is marked in several areas with "G. ASTER & CO. / 79 / CORNHILL LONDON / PATENT" with the unicorn head emblem. The creamy white joints and end caps contrast nicely with the warm honey wood and silver keys. The other instrument is a boxwood clarinet made by D’Almaine & Co, with brass keys and elephant ivory joints. The bell is marked with the crown emblem and “D'ALMAINE & CO. / LATE GOULDING & D'ALMAINE / SOHO SQUARE / LONDON." Condition
Flute has a stable pressure fissure to wood along barrel. Middle joints are stiff and do not come apart. Surface wear and scratches. Patina and toning to silver. Intact with clear legible markings. The clarinet has repairs to the joints and a large amount of adhesive residue across the upper and lower tube surfaces from reattaching the barrel rings. Stable fissures to ivory barrel rings on mouthpiece. All joints come apart. Fair condition. Both are not tested for playing functionality.
