Europe, Germany, ca. 1620 to 1630 CE. A fantastic steel helmet from the time of the Thirty Years War. The skull features a medial ridge flanked by lines forged from one piece. The visors and bevor have common pivots, and the lower visor is pierced on both sides with a radial cluster of breaths. The skull base and bevor each have a single rolled edge neck plate. The edges have rows of rivets formerly securing the leather liner bands inside, now lost, though the small space between each rivet and the surface are a testament to their presence in the past. The cheeks have decorative eight-pointed sunbursts, and the back has a small opening for placing a feather or other decoration, suggesting that this helmet was made to be used in tournaments or other festive occasions. Size: 9" W x 12" H (22.9 cm x 30.5 cm)
Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in June 2017; ex-William Fagan Ltd. collection, Fagan Arms, Clinton Township, Michigan, USA; believed to have been stored in a German town arsenal for several centuries prior to coming to the US with a GI after WWII
