Don Mitchell (American, 1938-2025). "Symphony in Egg Minor" mixed media (aluminum, wood, acrylic paint, and paper mache) sculpture, 2002. Signed and dated on red section above one wheel. A unique sculpture by Don Mitchell, an artist whose engineering background and sense of humor clearly inform his work, "Symphony in Egg Minor" is an abstract work that makes you smile. Baton in hand, the conductor stands on a podium nearly 3 feet high; beneath the podium is an openwork structure that several ambiguous figures climb; beneath this is a whimsical, colorful, wheeled structure that is steered by an abstract creature. The rear end of the vehicle features 4 white wheels decorated with red polka dots supporting abstract curvilinear elements as well as a bizarre floral form with petals that spin like a propeller, and 5 paper mache eggs rising from metal wires that sway to the touch. This piece is one-of-a-kind as Mitchell preferred to create unique pieces. In a PBS interview, Mitchell was asked about the whimsical nature of his works. He explained, "I'm not a deep, dark type individual. I am pretty lighthearted overall even though I have to tell my face to smile sometimes. The emotion that my art evokes is this fun and happiness. It makes people smile. It makes people look twice. We have enough grief in the world that we don't need to add to that I don't believe." Size: 22" L x 24" W x 45" H (55.9 cm x 61 cm x 114.3 cm)
Artist Statement: "All my life I've had to make things. People call me an artist, but I'm not always sure that's what I am. I'm just a guy that makes stuff . . . I was never trained as an artist. I've been referred to in some cases as an outsider artist, but I've also been told that my work is too sophisticated to fit into that category. Basically I'm an abstract artist without rules. . . If you look at all the work that I've done, you can easily say this was done by one guy. So I have a style, and I'm long past the point where I'm worried about whether or not my work fits into a given category."
About the Artist: Early in his career, Colorado artist Don Mitchell was an apprentice in the experimental engineering program at General Motors, and he had extensive experience as an engineer in manufacturing. Mitchell drew from his background in engineering to create captivating designs for his metal sculptures which are comprised of abstract shapes and dynamic forms. Mitchell's sculpture has been collected throughout the United States as well as other countries including Mexico, England, Canada, Germany, and Belgium. He created over 42 public art pieces, some as tall as 21 feet. A colorist, Mitchell uses vibrant hues to amplify the whimsical nature of his sculptures.
