Dennis Sohocki (American, ) "Contemplation" bronze on black granite, 2003. Edition 4 of 12. Signature and edition number on front lower edge of bronze. A monumental bronze abstract figural sculpture by Dennis Sohocki titled "Contemplation" depicting a human figure rendered in a Cubist manner. The form is comprised of a beautiful totemic arrangement of contiguous geometric volumes, each one further embellished on its surface, some with incised striations, others with swirls and vein motifs inspired by those of natural stone. The coloring also takes its inspiration from nature with warm earthtones. Interestingly, although it is a bronze, the sculpture gives the impression that it was carved from stone; note the "pecked" areas here and there as well as the "chiseled" ridges and grooves on the verso. Please note: this is one of Sohocki's most important works, and another "Contemplation" from the edition is permanently installed at the Benson Sculpture Garden in Loveland, Colorado. Size: 11" L x 11" W x 64.5" H (27.9 cm x 27.9 cm x 163.8 cm); 74.5" H (189.2 cm) on black granite base. Size (base itself): 16.625" L x 17.5" W x 10" H (42.2 cm x 44.4 cm x 25.4 cm)
Artist Statement: "I make contemporary sculptures in stone, bronze, and occasionally wood that are abstract or non-objective, from tabletop to monumental sizes. I consider my work classic modernism in the vein of Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Alexander Calder. My sculptures are in private and public collections throughout the U.S. and in various other countries. I am known for making unique pieces that, regardless of the material, capture a feeling, a motion, or a desire in ways that touch different people in different ways. I take pride in creating superior-quality sculptures with careful attention to detail and, especially with commissions, completing my work in a timely and professional manner... One kind art critic said of my work, 'A Sohocki abstraction is a poem in stone or bronze, opening up the senses, setting off memories and associations, and suggesting more than it states.'"
About the artist: "Sohocki is known for his classic, graceful modern forms in bronze, marble, stainless steel and hardwood. Sohocki's work evokes such images as contemplation, desert canyons, dance, and relationships between the ancient and contemporary. His work is from his subconscious, capturing the essence of things. Sohocki began carving while working and living with the Eskimos and Athabascan Indians of Alaska more than 45 years ago and has since been a professional sculptor.
'The beauty of abstract art is it can mean something different to each person who sees it. It captures our attention and inspires our imagination.' One art critic said 'a Sohocki abstraction is a poem in stone or bronze, opening up the senses, setting off memories and associations, and suggesting more than it states.'
Sohocki created and installed numerous monuments in the U.S. and internationally. His bronze 'Endangered Grace' rises twenty feet from the lake in Benson Park in Loveland, Colorado.
