Denis LeBecq (French, b. 1965). "Anse de Doelan" oil on linen, 2011. Signed lower left. A scintillating painting of the Port of Doelan in the village of Brittany by Denis Lebecq, an artist from Boulogne-sur-Mer in Pont-Aven - the Brittany region of Northwestern France best known for its artists' colony which began in the 1850s and the masterpieces of Paul Gauguin who lived and worked in Pont Aven during the 1880s and 1890s. In this composition, LeBecq employs a bold color palette akin to the Symbolists of Pont-Aven and captures both the tranquility of the sea as well as the playful delights that it inspires. Note the yellow fish chomping on a line extending from the blue boat in the foreground, as well as the row of boats in the distance, arranged as if they are the audience to this catch. Despite the levity of this narrative, LeBecq manages to place all in a setting that conjures a sense of calm, as the glasslike surface of the waters and the billowing clouds in azure skies above make us feel as if we are without a care in the world. Mounted in a museum-quality custom frame, all is rendered with Lebecq's brilliant palette, loose brushwork, rich impasto passages, and marvelous command of light - an approach he has described as "a minimalist and very colourful style leaving more room for imagination, escape and emotion." Size (painting): 15.625" L x 15.625" W (39.7 cm x 39.7 cm) Size (frame): 18.625" L x 18.625" W (47.3 cm x 47.3 cm)
About the artist: "Denis Lebecq was born in 1965. He is a native of Boulogne-sur-Mer but has made Pont-Aven, in Brittany, his home for over a decade. Growing up on the coast, Denis has always been drawn to and fascinated by the sea. 'I like to translate the beauty of the forms of boats at low tide and the forms of the fisherman and shellfish on the canvas.' …All of his colors have a sincere connection but at the same time, an independent life. 'The deep reds are like blood. The bright yellows are not bright, they are sunny. The light grays are voluptuous.' The sum of its parts, impregnated by color, creates a total presence that is at once both gentle and violent; a poetic energy that gives meaning and freedom to the imagination, allowing it to go its own direction."
