Maritime Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Dayak culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. A ceremonial spear fashioned from an iron kris-style sword blade mounted on the end of a short wood pole. The sinuous, watered-steel blade is protected by wooden sheath. The sheath and pole are adorned with painted geometric scrollwork in red, beige, and black, characteristic of Dayak visual aesthetics. Finger-woven cotton cords are wrapped around the surface, with tufts of goat or boar fur, and suspended wedge-shaped teeth - likely incisors from ungulates such as water buffalo - alongside colorful glass beads. A kris is a traditional Southeast Asian dagger or sword, known for its asymmetrical, often wavy blade and revered for its spiritual significance and masterful craftsmanship. The kris is widely honored across Indonesia and the broader Malay world, and its adoption among coastal Dayak communities reflects the influence of maritime trade and cultural exchange in the region. Size w/ sheath: 45" L x 2" W (114.3 cm x 5.1 cm); blade only: 10" L x 0.75" W (25.4 cm x 1.9 cm)
