David Alan (American, XX-XXI). "Double Totem" art glass sculpture, ca. 2003. David Alan's "Double Totem" is a unique, monumental sculpture comprised of two sizeable pieces of art glass that sit within a tiered press board base. Each glass "totem" presents a tall architectural form with chiseled and polished edges. The outer faces are embellished with applied glass beads; the inner faces are hand painted with lozenge-shaped motifs in blue, green, pink, and yellow hues and further embellished with speckled motifs; and the chiseled, polished edges are adorned with splattered pigments of ruby red and cobalt blue hues. Both totems sit within a tiered base of neutral beige hues that conjures the form of an ancient pyramid. A one-of-a-kind art glass sculpture by David Alan that is "a tribute to his intimate knowledge not only of his medium, but also the complex properties of light and light refraction." Size: 13" L x 14.25" W x 85" H (33 cm x 36.2 cm x 215.9 cm)
About the artist: "David Alan combines a strong sense of architectural design to create his sculptural works. David's glass process consists of chiseled and polished edges incorporated with other objects, from glass to faceted gem stones. Thru David's use of sandblasting, lamination, and hand coloring, the result becomes an energetic study of form, optics and color play.
Mr. Alan's works are a tribute to his intimate knowledge not only of his medium, but also the complex properties of light and light refraction. David's sculptures refract, diffuse, and reflect light in fluid symphonic motions. The fluidity of each creation is unique and uncompromising.
Mr. Alan's art ranges from purely aesthetic sculpture to a wide variety of functional pieces. In both the functional and nonfunctional art, the unerring detail of David's techniques are prevalent.
The art of David Alan is included in numerous public, private, and corporate collections worldwide. Mr. Alan has been featured in exhibits from Beverly Hills, California to Miami, Florida. In addition, Mr. Allan's work can be found in numerous galleries such as: Jordan Road, Artissimo, California Fine Arts, Boca Museum, Arizona Biltmore and The Phoenician to name a few."
