Daniel Sabater y Salabert (Spanish, 1888-1951). lithograph, ca. 1940s. Hand numbered 222 of 350 on lower left. Signed "D. Sabater" on lower right and titled "El Faquir Equilibrista" in the plate on lower left. A captivating composition by Daniel Sabater y Salabert, a Spanish artist who was born in Valencia in 1888 and became a Surrealist artist following a period of Impressionism. As we see in this example, he usually signed his paintings "D. Sabater". "El Faquir Equilibrista" or "The Tightrope Faker" features a mesmerizing performer who assumes a pose reminiscent of a balletic first position with extended arms, and balances a pumpkin or gourd in a chalice atop his head. Beside him is a bowl of veggies - perhaps at the ready to add to his balancing act. Size of image: 23.25" W x 14.75" H (59.1 cm x 37.5 cm) Size of sheet: 33.125" W x 22.5" H (84.1 cm x 57.2 cm)
Behind a curtain is a crowd of villagers who watch with various levels of engagement, and coins have been tossed beside the entertainer who dons a flamboyant costume consisting a red vest adorned by ribbons and medals and matching pleated skirt with a gold belt. For an extra touch of humor, a spider makes his web between the performer's squatting legs.
