Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989), "Ceci N'est Pas Une Assiette", Daum France glass plate, numbered 266/2000, 1970's. In the seventies, the French art glass company known as Daum invited Salvador Dali to design a limited edition of paate de verre plates. Dali's title "CECI N'EST PAS UNE ASSIETTE," in English, "This is not a dish," is a playful reference to fellow Surrealist Rene Magritte's 1929 painting of a pipe titled "This is not a pipe." The Daum company, has a storied history of producing sculptured glass art works, having been world renowned for its French Art Nouveau pate de verre vases during the late 19th and early 20th Century. Size: 10.375" in diameter (26.4 cm)
Together with the Zodiac-like design in the center of plate, Dali used the title to create a raised molten gold effect against the translucent aubergine pate glass. Dali's signature is engraved into the glass rim, lower right. On the underside, the plate is also engraved with "Daum", "266/2000", and "Made in France". The plate comes with a Daum Certificate of Authenticity which states that it is the 266th impression in an edition of 2000. Comes in the original numbered box and sleeve.
Pate de verde (literally glass paste) is a molded glass technique dating back to the Egyptians and further developed in Roman times. It was used in France in the 19th Century. In this process, finely crushed glass and binding materials are combined with pigments and enamels. After the coated mould is fired at the appropriate temperature the glass is fused creating a hollow object that can have thick or thin walls depending on the thickness of the pate de verre layers.
Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dali i Domenech, Marquis of Dalí de Pubol (May 11, 1904 – January 23, 1989) was a Spanish surrealist artist of Catalan ethnicity born in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. One of the most famous artists that has ever lived, Dali was a prolific creator working in many mediums such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, writing, multi-media, photography, and filmmaking to name a few. He had a famously eccentric personality, and with his exceptional skill as a draftsman and his unusually imaginative view of the world, Dali captured the attention of the public wherever his work was displayed. He created his own personal philosophy which he called paranoid critical - a state in which one could simulate delusion while still maintaining one’s sanity - which influenced the Surrealist movement. Dali’s world of tapping into the unconscious using symbolism filled with themes from religion, death, eroticism, and decay has fascinated even those who were not frequent art lovers. Dali was a great showman and loved being adored by his public. But needless to say, he had the talent to sustain his popularity even after his death.
