Ancient Greece, Cyprus, Archaic Period, ca. 6th to 3rd century BCE. A fine mold-made warrior statue with a rectangular body, recessed arm cavities, rounded shoulders leading to a thick neck, and a detailed head, all covered in a pale orange slip. Sensitive almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose, full lips, a prominent chin, and large ear discs comprise the figure's archaic visage, and a coiffure of tight curls is capped with a simple pointed helmet. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 3.1" W x 8.8" H (7.9 cm x 22.4 cm); 9.1" H (23.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Following the Persian Empire's absorption of Cyprus in 525 BCE, contact with the wealthy Eastern Greek cities on the western coast of Asia Minor increased, as they had also fallen under Persian rule. The influence of Greek sculptural style is evident in this statue with its relatively rigid, 'wooden' pose reminiscent of Greek Archaic art.
