Ancient Greece, Cyclades, ca. 2800 to 2700 BCE. Finely carved from marble, a Cycladic idol known as a Louros Type, this name derived from the site of its discovery, Louros on the island of Naxos. The idol stands upright and presents with a characteristically abstract anthropomorphic form comprised of distinct legs with clearly delineated calves, knees, and thighs; attenuated nubbin arms that likely were intended to suggest folded arms; and an extremely long cylindrical neck. An incised pubic triangle indicates that the statue represents a female. An impressive example of the Louros type. Size: 5.15" H (13.1 cm)
The Louros type idol is regarded as a transitional form between the abstract standing violin idols and the reclining idols with folded arms. Scholars of Cycladic sculpture refer to several specific types when discussing Early Bronze Age representations of the human figure. Like the Louros type, their names have been derived from the geographical areas where the idols were discovered.
Although experts have not conclusively determined their meaning and purpose, some suggest that these idols were regarded as gods and goddesses and served a religious function. Others have argued that they were used as attendants for the deceased. Still others have offered that they actually may have been used as toys. We also have little if any archaeological evidence to demonstrate whether they were used in domestic or ritual sites like shrines or temples. In addition, we do not know if they were supported by bases or stands or if they were simply leaned against a wall, niche, or another object. Despite the fact that many questions remain to be answered, Cycladic idols like this example continue to mesmerize us for their undeniable beauty as well as their possible meaning and purpose.
