Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Central Highlands, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A remarkable volcanic stone figure shown seated upon one knee as the other is propped up before him. Placing both hands on each knee, he holds a small vessel in his right hand, upon which he rests his face. His emaciated body hunches over, the ridges of his spine protruding from his back as his huge head leans forward displaying sizeable, coffee bean-shaped eyes beneath a narrowed brow, a broad nose, and a large mouth with full lips held closed. A pair of prominent ears flank his fascinating visage, sitting just below a helmet-like coiffure or headdress adorned with vertical striations. Condition
Head and vessel reattached with break lines visible. Expected nicks, chips, and abrasions, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with light earthen deposits throughout.
