Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya region, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. An impressive polychrome terracotta vessel with a bulbous lower body and a tall cylindrical neck, so skillfully hand-built and beautifully decorated. Around the neck are two magnificent jaguars sitting upon their hind legs but with their front legs raised and poised to move. The wild felines turn their heads back 180 degrees perhaps to stare down their prey, presenting intimidating expressions with raised ears and open mouths with extended tongues with three points at the end, hinting at a supernatural power. The attention to detail is very impressive; notice the spotted coats comprised of repeated circles surrounded by dots so as to resemble stars, perhaps a reference to the starry night sky as jaguars are nocturnal. Transformative figures taking on the fierce and unwieldy power of the jaguar are some of the most evocative and interesting figures from this culture, representing belief in a magical world inhabited by shapeshifting shamans. Size: 8.625" W x 8.6" H (21.9 cm x 21.8 cm)
Between the jaguars are abstract banded motifs. Above them, a band of stylized geometric motifs embellishes the vessel to the rim, and below on the rounded body is another band of stylized geometric motifs with linear borders. All is delineated in a palette of red, black, and orange. Finally the lower section of the body to the base features a simple yet elegant, perfectly symmetrical pattern of alternating orange and black sections, and the interior is enveloped in red slip.
