Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste / Nicoya region, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. An anthropomorphic hand carved jade axe celt with a rounded edge for cutting, and a decorative figure on the other end. The jade is a pale green with white speckled inclusions and is pleasantly smooth and polished. The shaman is delineated with incised lines and circles. The figure holds his hands in front, one pointing downward and the other across his chest. The face is comprised of an incised triangular nose, shallow circular eyes, with lines and notches at the top forming a headdress. A perforation through the neck enables this celt to attach to a handle or shaft to use as a tool. Celts were used for clearing brush or chopping, but the ones made from semi-precious materials, such as this jade example, were elite symbols of status and power. These ornate blades probably served a ritualistic rather than utilitarian purpose, especially when engraved with powerful figures, such as this shaman. This jade celt is perfectly preserved and perhaps buried with the deceased as a powerful offering to take to the underworld. Size: 1.9" W x 5.75" H (4.8 cm x 14.6 cm); 6.5" H (16.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Jadeite was the material of choice for celts in Mesoamerican cultures because of its resistance to chipping or shattering. The green stone was symbolic of agricultural fertility and was carved in an abstract, simplistic style, with images of shaman, deities or animals, which would imbue powers to the owner. Celts played a ritualistic purpose and were often buried as offerings with the deceased. Bringing a shaman figure to the underworld would certainly be helpful for navigating and interpreting for any spirits or gods they came across.
