Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rican Highlands, Guapiles, Huetar culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery jar resting upon a trio of drooping semicircular legs. The round-bottomed vessel has a tall shoulder adorned with six charming monkeys of a characteristically abstract presentation with bulbous heads and sinuous tails. Areas of the bowl are decorated with earthy vermilion slip atop the buffware surface and imbue the vessel with fine coloration evocative of ancient Costa Rica! Size: 5.7" W x 3.8" H (14.5 cm x 9.7 cm).
