Ancient Greece, Corinth, 7th to 6th century BCE. A stunning wheel-thrown pottery skyphos of elegant form, presenting with a discoid foot and remarkably thin walls that rises to a bulbous body and circular rim flanked by two tubular looped handles and a dynamic scene of lions or leopards hunting an ibex or goat. The pale background contrasts well with the black and umber hues pigments- a solid colored foot with radiating lines below the main register. A pair of lions with slinky bodies stalk a horned ibex- a bird and foliate and stippled motifs are scattered throughout filling the rest of the frieze- and the finer details are incised into the surface. All is framed by several solid lines and wavy vertical lines around the mouth. Size: 10.5" Diameter x 5" H (26.7 cm x 12.7 cm)
During this time, Corinthian pottery showed the influence of eastern trade connections with the city. Vessels with stylized plants and animals like this example were inspired by the art and friezes of Egypt and Assyria.
