Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Tlingit, ca. 2000 CE. Carved "LAVALLE" on verso of forehead. A stunning wood mask, expertly hand-carved and hand-painted by the Tlingit artist Rich LaValle. Embellished with hues of crimson and black on a smooth caramel woodgrain, the expressive visage displays naturalistic eyes with openwork pupils beneath huge, arched eyebrows, a curved nose with wide nostrils, and a slightly open mouth displaying bared teeth. His thick lower lip exaggeratedly extends outwards and is adorned with an iridescent abalone shell inlay along its top. Lengthy strands of horsehair flow from the top of the vizard, inserted via petite, annular drill holes along the top periphery of the forehead. The swirling red-painted motif that dances across the face likely represents face paint. A pair of drill holes flanks the vizard, allowing it to be strapped to the face of its wearer. Note how the natural parallel striations of the woodgrain nicely compliment the form and decoration of this wonderful example! Size: 6.125" W x 9.25" H (15.6 cm x 23.5 cm)
Rich LaValle has been a Tlingit wood carver since 2000, though he was not born into the Tlingit culture. He began weaving Pacific Northwest style textiles before beginning his craft as a wood-turner upon moving with his wife to Portland, Oregon, and was approached directly by members of the Tlingit tribe to carve Tlingit masks. Rich and his wife were then formally adopted into the Tlingit tribe in the year 2000. His Tlingit name is "Kut Daa Jaa Gu," and his wife's Tlingit name is "Shawat Googh." Rich is known throughout the Pacific Northwest Coast for his fine craftsmanship of traditional Tlingit face masks, rattles, hat fronts, and textiles.
