- Lot Description
Michael Delaney (American, 20th century), a charcoal/graphite drawing on paper, ca. late 20th to early 21st century. Signed at lower right. An impressive, realistic depiction of the back of a male figure with marvelous attention to skeletal framework and musculature. On the verso is another drawing of a male figure's torso. Michael Delaney is a New York artist best known for his depictions of the human figure inspired by Renaissance masters. The tradition of the male nude took hold in ancient Greece, when athletes competed sans clothing and the Greeks elevated them as ideal representatives of the human race, associated with virtue and victory. Sculptors depicted the Olympian Gods as athletic nudes and created statues of nude athletes as sanctuary offerings. Renaissance artists greatly admired this tradition and artists such as Michelangelo certainly did the theme justice. Size: 19.375" W x 26.5" H (49.2 cm x 67.3 cm)
Delaney studied with Wolf Kahn at the American Academy of Art and Max Ginsberg at the Art Students League.
