Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A charming and well-modeled Colima redware dog effigy, depicting a plump, seated canine with perked ears and an alert forward gaze. The figure is crouched on its hind legs, with a well-defined snout, incised toothy mouth, and detailed nostrils, exemplifying the naturalistic style of West Mexican shaft tomb cultures. A spout at the top of the head suggests a functional use, likely as a vessel for ritual or ceremonial purposes, such as holding grave offerings. Dogs held significant spiritual and cultural importance in Mesoamerican societies, often associated with the afterlife, guidance, and companionship. This example, with scattered mineral deposits and a highly burnished redware surface, is a beautiful representation. Size: 10.5" L x 6" W x 11.5" H (26.7 cm x 15.2 cm x 29.2 cm)
