Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel in the shape of a portrait head. The vessel exhibits a slightly convex but stable base, a hemispherical body with raised decorations, and a conical spout protruding from the verso. The obverse bears a stylized anthropomorphic face, perhaps that of a warrior, with puffy cheeks and forehead, an upturned nose, pursed lips, and coffee-bean-shaped eyes. An intricate helmet rests atop the head with a peaked frontal brim as well as two pairs of scalloped flanges. Size: 4.25" W x 4.5" H (10.8 cm x 11.4 cm)
