Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A lovely example of a squat pedestal dish, hand-built from pottery, with highly burnished surfaces decorated in hues of cream, brick red, pale amethyst, and jet black. The flared pedestal bears a trio of slit-form cut-outs, and the rim is adorned with narrow strips of alternating pigment. Within the shallow basin is a pair of abstract avian creatures - with red-orange and purple bodies and claws - that share a mutual beak tip as it is fused in the middle of the basin surface. Size: 6.75" W x 3.6" H (17.1 cm x 9.1 cm)
