**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel of a charming form depicting a highly stylized feline creature accentuated with red, black, and purple hues atop a cream ground. The rotund cat stands atop a quartet of nubbin legs and has a bulbous body, a petite, conical tail, and a wide rim lined with black serrations. The protruding head bears a pair of bullseye-style eyes outlined in red, a slender nose with flared nostrils, and a V-shaped mouth lined with sharp teeth and slender whiskers. Featured on the body are four abstract saurian creatures with narrow heads, upturned noses, sharpened teeth, and rows of huge serrations lining their backs. An interesting zoomorphic example from ancient Panama! Size: 7.5" L x 5.75" W x 5.125" H (19 cm x 14.6 cm x 13 cm)

Condition
Front half of vessel repaired from multiple pieces, with restoration in several exterior areas that are nearly invisible and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and small nicks to exterior surfaces, with touch-up painting to original pigment mostly along back half, and heavy encrustations within basin. Great preservation to original painted motifs across exterior. Nice original craquelure across back half of vessel.
