United States, Buffalo, New York, ca. 1861 to 1864 but given post Civil War, approximately 1870. US Army presentation sword carried during the Civil War. What makes this sword so appealing to collectors is the fact this it posthumously given in honor for a Medal of Honor recipient for his gallantry in the war. Brass and iron officer's sword, blade decorated on each side with floral elements and large "US" on one side and "E Pluribus on the other. Shield on outside of iron and brass scabbard reads "Presented to Lt. John N. McVean(e), Co.D. 49th Reg't, NY So V By his friends in Buffalo. Size (w/ scabbard): 5" L x 3" W x 39.125" H (12.7 cm x 7.6 cm x 99.4 cm); (blade): 30.8" L (78.2 cm)
McVeane was an American soldier who fought in the American Civil War from 1861 through his death in 1964. McVeane's medal was won for capturing the flag from a Confederate Color bearer at Fredericksburg Heights. He was posthumously honored with the award on September 21, 1870.
