- Lot Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Guanajuato Valley, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A fabulous, hand-built pottery depiction of a rotund female standing atop slender legs. She boasts ample hips, a distended abdomen indicative of pregnancy, perky breasts, and bent arms stemming from lightly-rounded shoulders. Her back is dramatically humped and leads upwards to a thick neck. Incised ovoid eyes with beady pupils, a prominent nose, a gaping mouth, bulb-shaped ears with recessed ear canals, and a rounded pate define her expressive visage, and a thick layer of red slip adorns her body. Cream-hued step motifs outlined in black decorate her body, back, and head, and parallel registers of vertical linear bars adorn the circumference of her thighs. A fabulous and finely-executed figural example from ancient West Mexico! Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 5" W x 6.8" H (12.7 cm x 17.3 cm); 7.625" H (19.4 cm) on included custom stand.
