South America, Brazil, Ceara, Santana Formation, Lower Cretaceous, ca. 110 million years ago. This large and spectacular Calamopleurus fish fossil displays a rare and exceptional preservation that we scarcely see today in this species! Numerous hours of painstaking professional preparation work were performed to reveal the remarkable anatomy: every tooth, fin and bony armor plate is exposed, and rock was removed from inside the jaws to highlight the array of sizable teeth! The head regions and body exhibit the heavy armor of large scales and bony plates this fish is known for! Calamopleurus is a type of extinct, prehistoric bowfin that lived in swampy waters during the peak days of the dinosaurs in the Cretaceous - their teeth and armor plates made for a formidable predator. Bowfin were famous for their large caudal fin and this too, was carefully exposed to reveal a complete tail! We cannot stress enough how amazing the fish is; the combined natural preservation and skill of the preparator have created an incredible specimen! Size: 33" L (83.8 cm)
After meticulous hours of preparation, there is almost nothing left to improve on this amazing fossil- take a look at the eye lens and teeth- superb preservation and carefully exposed to show off the intimate details! Because the anatomy of this fish is very delicate, fine quality complete specimens of this species are very rare and an example like this is unrivaled. While many Santana fish fossils on the market are replicated using pieces of multiple fish, this example stands out as a rare offering as it is a true, original complete specimen!
Santana fossils are known for not only their extreme diversity, but also for their breath-taking preservation considered by scientists to include the finest examples of fossils in existence. The formation provides an amazing window into the prehistoric world from the Lower Cretaceous, 110 million years ago!
