Pre-Columbian, Southeastern Mexico, Guerrero region, Chontal culture, ca. 800 to 300 BCE. A large greenstone anthropomorphic idol figure, with a stylized, angular body- one of the finer examples of this form- intact with gorgeous stone coloration! He stands with thick legs slightly separated, hands to his chest with delineated fingers, and the oversized head upon broad shoulders. The face has been simplified with string-cut lines - including a triangular nose, lips, nasolabial folds, and narrow eye grooves - and atop his head is a headdress or cap with a thick brim. His expression when viewed in concert with the hands held together over the abdominal region, suggests a somewhat trancelike, meditative, or even chanting state. The degree of workmanship, size, and preservation make this a truly museum grade piece! Size: 5.5" L x 2.5" W x 14.25" H (14 cm x 6.4 cm x 36.2 cm); 14.75" H (37.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Chontal sculptors created grave offerings that are dramatically abstract yet simultaneously present features that are somewhat naturalistic. The beauty of the stone in addition to the elegant delineation of the form of this example make for an impressive piece!
