Native American, Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. This is a beautiful hand built pottery bowl using the coil and scrape technique before decorating with a painted polychrome program of abstract geometric motifs. The bowl rests on a rounded but stable base, and the walls swell gently outward then up to a thick rim. The interior and exterior ground is painted a creamy beige hue, and the motifs along the exterior begin just below the shoulder. The register consists of a stepped interlocking linear and triangular pattern in black and orange. The surface is pleasantly smooth, remarkable for the age and techniques used. The Casas Grandes culture acted as an intermediary between Central American peoples and the Mogollon and Hohokam peoples of the north. The aesthetic and cultural influence reached from central New Mexico in the north to central Chihuahua in the south. This bowl is intact and a choice addition to any collection! Size: 6.75" Diameter x 4" H (17.1 cm x 10.2 cm)
The Casas Grandes (or Chihuahua) culture has always been the best known of the prehistoric cultures of northwest Mexico. International awareness of the culture first derived from its polychrome pottery and from the massive ruins of the culture's principal center, Casas Grandes - now better known as Paquime.
