- Lot Description
China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. Very pleasant pottery attendant in the form of a kneeling female figure holding a small rolled object, probably a pillow, upon her lap. She is decorated in shades of black, red and white and shows nice detailing. Size: 5.125" W x 10" H (13 cm x 25.4 cm)
During the Tang Dynasty, mortuary wares, such as this figure, were popular and entombed with all members of society- of course the wealthy had numerous and ornate pottery creations, however, even a poor man might have half a dozen objects for the afterlife! Mingqi were any of a variety of objects specifically created for interment in the tombs of elite individuals to provide for the afterlife, and included animals, furniture, food, and people as servants.
Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private Bath, UK collection, acquired in Hong Kon in the 1980s - 1990s
