East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A magnificent marble sculpture of Buddha (Shakyamuni, the Enlightened form), dressed in traditional robes with an elegant knotted waist sash/belt and seated in full lotus position atop a throne with draped fabric, perhaps silk, cascading over the front, his right hand in the abhaya mudra, the "gesture of fearlessness" and left in the varada mudra of giving and granting blessings. Buddha's contemplative peaceful visage is comprised of downcast eyes, an elegant nose, pursed lips, and characteristically elongated ears - all topped by a smooth top bun. Liberal remains of red and black pigment adorn the surface, while a Chinese inscription is incised on the verso. Size: 8" L x 10.9" W x 22.5" H (20.3 cm x 27.7 cm x 57.2 cm)
