East Asia, China, Six Dynasties Period, Northern Qi Dynasty, ca. 550 to 577 CE. An intricately-carved stone statue depicting a Bodhisattva (also Guanyin, Guan Yin, Kuanyin), the goddess of kindness, compassion, and mercy. She stands with her left leg extended beneath a flowing gown with dozens of delineated folds, her waist cinched with a thin belt cord, with sloping shoulders tracing downwards to rigid arms. Her drooping right arm holds a jar of pure water (known as the nectar of wisdom, mercy, and life), and her raised left arm holds a willow branch that she uses to sprinkle the water onto her devotees as a blessing of both physical and spiritual peace. Areas of her vestments are decorated with faint red and orange pigment which suggest this figure was at one time adorned with vivid pigmentation. Custom lucite display stand included. Size: 3.375" W x 7.75" H (8.6 cm x 19.7 cm); 9.2" H (23.4 cm) on included custom stand.
Bodhisattvas are among the most compassionate beings in the universe, devoting themselves to saving the suffering and helping others achieve enlightenment and Buddhahood. Traditionally depicted as less austere than Buddhas with graceful postures and elegant garments, a nod to the riches of the Northwestern Chinese Silk Road, this piece is no exception. Bodhisattvas or Guanyin are associated with compassion and mercy - their long ears significant, because they rescues all human beings by hearing their cries for help and the sounds of suffering.
