East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A sizable wooden guardian statue depicting Weituo (also Bodhisattva Skanda in Buddhism), a protective warrior deity dressed in ornate armor and standing atop a red platform adorned with a dragon and clouds. He presents with a forward lean, holds one hand above a missing sword, and places the other on his hip. His chainmail-style armor features plates on his thighs and arms, vambraces with dramatically curved protrusions, a lengthy skirt, and a thick cuirass. A carved-out slot behind the back-panel acts as a votive shrine that permitted one to insert offerings. His stylized countenance features slender eyes, puffy cheeks, and smirking lips beneath a 'feather'-topped helmet adorned with stars and petite flowers. The warrior is covered in thin linen with red, brown, and black pigments accentuating certain features, and the entire figural carving is covered in fine gilding. Size: 18.75" L x 18.5" W x 34.875" H (47.6 cm x 47 cm x 88.6 cm); 42.125" H (107 cm) on included base.
