- Lot Description
East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 1644 to 1912 CE. A finely carved reliquary figure depicting a seated male garbed in fine vestments in a dynamic pose. Dressed in many lavish layers of fabric, including pants tied with a belt and a long robe that opens at the front to expose his bulbous belly, the figure sits on a small bench and raises his right leg, bending at the knee. The long sleeves of his robe swirl in the wind at his elbows, forming volutes and imbuing the figure with a mystical aura, as he raises a rectangular object above his head in his right hand and bends his left arm to hold an object in front of him, perhaps performing a type of ritual. His face, surprisingly calm in contrast to his energetic pose, looks to his left, displaying a full-lipped closed mouth, a round nose, and an arched brow, all flanked by two long ears and topped with a tall square hat, which suggests he is a learned man of the Imperial Court. Lovely remains of red and black paint and lustrous gold gilding further adorn this remarkable example from the Qing Dynasty! Size: 5.625" L x 4.625" W x 11.125" H (14.3 cm x 11.7 cm x 28.3 cm)
A narrow cavity in the back is meant to hold votive offerings or prayer scrolls and is covered with a rectangular wooden panel.

#160136Proper right arm, left hand, and front and right side of hat have been reattached. A few cracks, hairline fissures, and nicks/chips throughout, as well as pitting, especially in back, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with impressive remains of pigment and lovely encrustations in recessed areas.Condition
