- Lot Description
East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Majiayao culture, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE; Warring States Period, ca. 476 to 221 BCE. A wonderful set of three hand-built pottery bowls, 2 from the Neolithic Majiayao culture, and 1 from the Warring States period. The first Majiayao bowl is decorated with linear motifs across the exterior as well as linear and crosshatched motifs on the interior. The second and largest Majiayao bowl is of orangeware construction and bears a register of crosshatch-filled diamonds across the exterior walls; the interior bears a pair of abstract lobed motifs. The Warring States vessel is a squat, apple-shaped jar with a planar base and a flared rim, all surrounded by impressed netting patterns to imbue it with a textured gripping surface in the absence of handles. Size of largest: 10.625" W x 4.1" H (27 cm x 10.4 cm)

#160864Largest bowl has stabilization to one lengthy fissure along walls, with light adhesive residue along break lines. Warring States vessel has chips to rim and softening to some impressed patterns, with nicks to rims and painted surfaces of both Majiayao bowls, otherwise intact and very good. Nice remains of pigment across both Majiayao bowls.Condition
