East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A truly remarkable stone baluster, an important element of Ming architecture, known in Chinese as "wangzhu". This incredible column has been carefully hand-carved to feature the charming figure of a monkey shown seated with legs crossed as he places his left arm on his lower leg and holds a fruit, perhaps a peach, to his mouth. Backed by a tall arch resembling the back of a throne, the adorable animal displays a plump body, sizable hands and feet with lengthy fingers and toes, and an expressive visage comprised of bulging eyes beneath an exaggeratedly arched brow, a wide, flat nose, and an open mouth fit with two rows of square teeth that gnash on the fruit. A pair of pointed ears caps his head. The pillar on which he sits is embellished with a geometric motif of upside-down triangles circles. Size: 8.625" L x 7.625" W x 21.5" H (21.9 cm x 19.4 cm x 54.6 cm)
Ming Dynasty architects continued the Chinese tradition of having important buildings - towers, pavilions, palaces, meeting halls, etc. - built atop terraces, requiring a walk up a grand stone staircase to reach them. These are bordered by balustrades punctuated by balusters. Most famously, the group of buildings known as San Da Dian (The Three Great Halls) at the Forbidden City in Beijing, feature 1460 balusters. Viewed from a distance, these resemble a stone forest.
