East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A monumental hand-carved sandstone vessel boasting a rectangular base and thick walls that rise over a shallow basin decorated with intricately carved reliefs. Presenting in a warm russet hue, the ancient vessel features a figural design on one longer side and a nautical motif on the other, while the two shorter sides boast smooth walls with a central, square divot and left and right borders of horizontal striations. The skillfully sculpted figural side is divided into seven separate panels with the five central sections under a flat, ridged roof and the two outer scenes boasting vegetal decorations in their upper corners, suggesting the interior scenes are domestic and those on the periphery occur outdoors. Aside from the medial segment, each partition exhibits three figures draped in long robes and wearing elaborate headdresses. Size: 54.125" L x 17.5" W x 10.25" H (137.5 cm x 44.4 cm x 26 cm); 17.75" H (45.1 cm) on included custom stand.
The central narrative displays five figures gathered around a table, perhaps to enjoy a feast. The other side of the marvelous vessel displays a gorgeous theme of detailed branches and leaves above swirling nautical waves. Several charming creatures can be seen within the water, such as a crab, a duck, and two fish.
