- Lot Description
China, late Ming Dynasty, Zhangzhou, ca. 1450 to 1600 CE. A lovely and quite superb example of Swatow ware, also called Zhangzhou ware, polychrome pottery! Known for its overglazing technique and coarse, sandy base, this charger was created using 3 colors - medium blue, deep red and black. Decorated with three abstract turtles (landscape decorations on interior carapace) - certainly a wish for longevity to the owner - amid three red "chop" designs and a central lanscape theme. Reverse left reserved save single red line around upper rim. Size: 15" W x 3" H (38.1 cm x 7.6 cm)
