East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A beautiful hand-carved stone panel made from a massive piece of granite featuring a scene of 3 scholars and a young man. The scholars display lengthy beards in moustaches and wear floor-length cloaks and hats, while the young man also wears a cloak and a hat, but presents a round, clean-shaven visage. The young man stands beneath a pagoda, appearing to analyze a scroll with 2 of the scholars as the other scholar approaches them from a courtyard with hands held together; the scroll displays a Chinese character. A lovely tree branch with starburst-like flowers reaches from the background to the foreground, resting above the intricately detailed pagoda roof and arching above a tall fence with a meander motif border at its top. The image is skillfully rendered, demonstrating an acute understanding of perspective, depth, and detail, as evident in the many-layered composition, the realistic architecture of the pagoda, and the geometric design adorning the floor representing tiles. Size: 25.5" L x 3" W x 26" H (64.8 cm x 7.6 cm x 66 cm)
