**First Time At Auction**
East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. An alert dog with a strong and protective energy that served as a fierce guardian for his master's tomb! This mold made dog is naturalistic with nice remains of a glazed harness around his barrel chest and snout. Funerary figures like this one are part of a class of artifacts called mingqi - sometimes known as "spirit utensils" or "vessels for ghosts" that were deposited in tombs to assist the deceased in the afterlife. Mingqi dogs were loyal companions and protectors. Although the size of a chihuahua, this was a representation of a chowchow or its shar pei relative – identifiably by the perked ears and curled tail. Size: 14" L x 6" W x 12.8" H (35.6 cm x 15.2 cm x 32.5 cm)
Before the widespread use of pottery figurines, dogs were ritually sacrificed for burial with the deceased, luckily mingqi replaced the need for real dogs. Han Dynasty sculptors recreated various breeds of dogs in their artwork, and this example is a chow / shar pei dog, who are often shown with harnesses and collars because in life they were often chained by entrances to homes for protection, and chows were also used to pull small sleighs. All Han Dynasty pottery dogs were formed by two-part molds. Once the main form was attained, details such as eyebrows and whiskers were added. We see more dogs appearing in the later Han period, frequently in tombs. This is most likely because during this period the landed gentry lived on large estates and needed dogs to patrol and guard the property.
