China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. This elegant pottery figure represents a court lady, capturing the refined grace of Han Dynasty art. Dressed in flowing robes with delicate detailing, she stands in a poised, upright posture, her hands possibly positioned in a gesture indicative of courtly etiquette or respect. Figures such as this were often placed in tombs as mingqi (spirit objects), intended to accompany and serve the deceased in the afterlife, reflecting the Han belief in a richly provisioned afterlife. The figure’s serene expression, modest attire, and the stylized, elongated form highlight the Han Dynasty’s aesthetic sensibility and the emphasis on dignity and harmony in the portrayal of women of the court. This piece serves as both a representation of ancient Chinese culture and a testament to the era’s funerary traditions. Size: 5.1" L x 5.6" W x 17" H (13 cm x 14.2 cm x 43.2 cm)
Provenance: private Owen collection, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA, acquired in the 1990s from a US-based dealer
