East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 220 BCE to 206 CE. A hand-built pottery eagle presenting an intriguing pose with its head bowed down towards wide feet with both wings curved downwards as if approaching a perch for a landing. The sinuous creature is decorated with applied white, yellow, and red pigment suggestive of colorful feathers. This bird was perhaps part of a larger figural ensemble with other animals and humans.
