East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A cast leaded-bronze vase known as a "garlic head" hu, with an elegant and aged presentation resting upon a hollow pedestal foot with a squat and rounded body. The elongated neck has a lobed finial around the circular mouth rim, shaped like a head of garlic- hence the flavorful name for this vessel. This unique form originated during the Warring States period (475 to 221 BCE) for storing wine and the bulbous head remained popular until the Han period. The surface has a wonderful patina of green and blue hues under earthen and mineral encrustations, attesting to the age of this vessel that may have been buried in a tomb to sustain and accompany the deceased in the afterlife. Size: 8" Diameter x 11" H (20.3 cm x 27.9 cm)
