East Asia, China, Longquan, Zhejiang province, Song Dynasty, ca. 1127 to 1279 CE. A stunning celadon ceramic jar, made to hold a rice offering in a tomb. It features a bulbous lower body with a low foot and a narrow shoulder and neck. Three dimensional horses parade around the neck. A fitted lid with a curved border sits neatly atop the vessel, with a seated horse serving as both its handle and a decorative finial. A beautiful pale blue-green celadon glaze has been applied to the lid and body from the top down, creating a lovely feathered pattern on the body and thick drips around the foot. Size: 7.75" W x 19" H (19.7 cm x 48.3 cm)
Longquan celadon ceramics are known for their varying shades of either blue, blue green, or olive green. In addition to widespread domestic use, these were some of China's most important exports during the Song period, and were widely imitated in Korea and Japan. The body was thrown on a potter's wheel and the color of the glaze that covers all but its foot comes from iron oxides fired in a reducing atmosphere. These objects were fired in "dragon kilns", long brick tunnels that rose up a slope, to provide slow and even heating. Archaeologists estimate that up to 25,000 vessels would be made at once in the largest of these kilns!
