Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A stunning textile using a plain weave cotton fiber ground cloth in light beige and supplementary camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers! Long-legged, long-necked wading birds facing the same direction are arranged on this main ground cloth- brocaded to create a raised texture using ochre yellow-brown and red hues. Bordering the upper and lower edges are slit tapestry style solid bands, curvilinear brocade motifs, and fringe. Tapestry weaving was considered high quality and luxurious, a textile marker of prestige and wealth. This textile is professionally mounted on a tan cotton over a frame and is ready to be displayed! Condition
Minor mending with thread to several perforations in center of textile and small areas of frayed fibers. Areas of staining and discoloration. Overall excellent condition and superb preservation. Professionally mounted on a cloth backing over a wooden frame and ready to display.
