Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu/Inca culture, ca. 1100 to 1532 CE. A lovely pottery vessel presenting a spherical body, a conical spout, and a ribbon-form handle connecting body to spout, all sitting upon a flat base. Enveloped in a rich, black slip, the charming example exhibits a stylized face on its spout, displaying semi-circular eyes, a protruding nose, a gentle smile, and a large pair of ears pierced with annular drill holes for suspending adornments. A tall, tapering cap tops the figure's head, forming the mouth of the vessel. Behind the head, the handle is adorned with the form of 2 monkeys facing one another, each featuring a flat body with slender legs, incised claws, and sinuous tails. Their confronting heads project outwards, capped with elaborate headdresses that sit above huge eyes and round snouts. Size: 5.6" W x 5.9" H (14.2 cm x 15 cm)
