Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 500 to 800 CE. A charming mold-formed pottery stirrup vessel in the form of a duck afloat on the water. Boasting a lustrous black glaze, the lovely vessel presents a protruding head at one end and a tapered tail at the other as a cylindrical stirrup spout projects from its back. The adorable animal displays a naturalistic head with target-motif eyes, a prominent basal knob, and a lengthy, downward pointing bill. A pair of attenuated legs with petite feet are displayed on the sides of the bird's body, drawn up beneath its folded wings. One side of the stirrup spout presents a tiny monkey with a sinuous tail.
