Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished blackware pottery vessel depicting a male dog lying on its side. Presented in a gray-black hue, the charming vessel presents a canine with a bulbous body with all four legs tucked beneath, perhaps bound, and delineated genitalia beneath the conical tail. The protruding head bears incised bullseye-form eyes, slender whiskers, perky ears, and bared teeth. Atop its exposed side is an arching, stirrup-shaped handle surmounted by both a cylindrical spout as well as a petite, stylized avian creature. Condition
Handle repaired and reattached to handle bases, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions to body and base, with light encrustations within some recessed areas and incised details. Great preservation to canine form.
