Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. A beautiful and wearable necklace comprised of over 150 ancient beads of Spondylus shell, sodalite, and chrysocolla stones. The strand is symmetrically balanced with petite barrel, seed, and disc-shaped beads. The shell beads present hues of orange citrine and creamy white, with a few blue chrysocolla beads interspersed alongside that contrast nicely with the warm tones. Spondylus shells were revered and traded between Pre-Columbian cultures. Chrysocolla is a beautiful stone of green and blue hues that is often found in association with azurite and malachite. At the center is a large cylindrical pendant bead made from sodalite stone with pretty blue and mottled brown veins. The beads are strung in modern times on a wire strand with a gold-plated lobster clasp, making this a wearable piece of history! Size of strand: 21.25" L (54 cm); pendant bead: 1.3" L x .5" W (3.3 cm x 1.3 cm)
The Spondylus shell is native to coastal waters of South America and was considered sacred by many cultures. Mesoamerican divers gathered the Spondylus from the depths of the Pacific ocean as offerings to Pachamama, goddess of fertility. At the Inca site, Marcahuamachuco, about 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of spondylus shells and fragments were recovered at a shrine! The Spondylus carries numerous symbolic meanings; a symbol of fertility and elite social status, it was also believed to be an omen of rain, warning the indigenous people of El Nino. In fact, the Spondylus shell only appears when the water becomes warmer during December - the time of the El Nino Current – immediately before the rainy season.
